Red Tails

There are many reasons to love spring up at reverie like all the vegetables that we are starting to get now, all the trees in bloom, the change in temperature etc.
But one of my favorite things is seeing all the animals getting ready to build nests.

Now I’m no expert on birds and so when a few weeks ago we started to hear loud screeching throughout the whole day I thought it was all the woodpeckers coming back, but after a while I noticed a bird of prey overhead and he or she just stuck around. We do have a lot of vultures around and so seeing a bird of prey is not that exciting and we have the occasional golden eagle and others fly over but this bird was clearly not leaving.

I decided to keep an eye on it and see what it looked like and what sound it made and so I found that this was the origin of the screeching sounds we’ve been hearing.
It did seem odd that one bird could make so much noise and so on further investigation we noticed 4 birds.

I still had no idea what kind they were and looking through guide books I was still not completely convinced so when one of our friends was able to identify it by it’s coat we finally knew that we had multiple red-tailed hawks flying around.

One warm afternoon it looked like there were two couples starting to form from the four hawks flying around as they were all overhead and chasing each other, now again I am no expert so maybe I was misreading what was happening in the sky since as of a week or so there are only two birds left.

Maybe one couple had to find their own territory or maybe we only had one couple that kicked out their kids…. we’ll never know for sure I guess.

All I can say is that it is a joy watching them fly around and hearing them and knowing that we have a place that many animals call their home.
